Services for Adolescents and Children
Rachel offers individual and family therapy for children ages 3-12 and for adolescents ages 13-17. Sessions with children are typically 45 minutes with the last 5 minutes of the session spent with caretakers updating them on the therapeutic progress. Rachel utilizes several techniques including EMDR, Sandplay, and Therapeutic play to assist children and adolescents with healing or obtaining skills for better behavioral outcomes.
What is Therapeutic Play?
Therapeutic play, (including play therapy) , is a safe, confidential and caring therapeutic approach where an environment is created which allows the child to play with as few limits as possible but as many as necessary (for physical and emotional safety). This allows healing to occur on many levels following our natural inner trend towards health. Play and creativity operate on impulses from outside our awareness - the unconscious. Recent research by PTUK, an organisation affiliated to PTI, suggests that 71% of the children referred to play therapy will show a positive change.
What is sand Play?
Sandplay therapy is a nonverbal, therapeutic intervention that makes use of a sandbox, toy figures, and sometimes water, to create scenes of miniature worlds that reflect a person’s inner thoughts, struggles, and concerns. This form of play therapy is practiced along with talk therapy, using the sandbox and figures as communication tools. Sandplay therapy is often used with those who have suffered some form of trauma, neglect, or abuse. Although sandplay is especially well suited for working with young children, who often cannot express their inner feelings in words, it is also a technique that is helpful for some teens and adults who are having trouble expressing themselves and who may have suffered some form of severe trauma.
